About The Arbours Crisis Centre

The Arbours Crisis Centre is a facility of the Arbours
Housing Association, a registered charity founded in 1970 in order to
assist people in emotional distress and offer alternatives to traditional
psychiatric treatment. It offers a real alternative to hospitalisation
both for those experiencing emotional crisis for the first time as well
as for those with a history of severe emotional distress. We have a proven
track record of working effectively with individuals who have not responded
significantly to medication and/or long periods of in-patient care. All
placements here are voluntary and the main criteria is that prospective
guests choose to come to the centre and are willing to participate in
the therapeutic work of the community.
The Centre receives referrals from Area Health Authorities,
Social Services, psychiatrists, psychotherapists and general practitioners,
as well as direct requests for help from individuals and their families.
Initial contact can be made by phone. This allows an opportunity for the
situation being presented to be discussed. Services available within Arbours
as well as other external options may be explored. If appropriate, a consultation
will be arranged.
Consultations are arranged by appointment. The individual meets with
a team consisting of a senior psychotherapist, a resident therapist and,
if appropriate, a trainee psychotherapist. The purpose of the consultation
process is to assess the nature of the intervention required and the process
may in itself become a focus crisis intervention or undertake the form
of brief psychotherapy.
If required the centre is able to advise with regards to funding applications,
consult reports may also be provided.
If residential treatment is indicated/appropriate a clinical decision
is made at the end of the consultation period as to the length of stay
to be offered.
